Warsaw is a modern capital of Poland with a population of over 1,7 million. It stretches on the banks of the Vistula river. Warsaw is an important economic, political, industrial and cultural center, great communication hub of international importance. Warsaw has a great and rich history and culture. The first mention about city was found in the records of the 14th century. According to the ancient Polish spelling ‘Varschewia’, ‘Warseuiensis’, ‘Warszewa’, it means “belonging to Warsz”. Folk etymology describes the origin of the city’s name. It comes from the fisherman’s name Wars who owned the village with his wife Sawa.

The official name of the city sounds ‘Miasto Stołeczne Warszawa’ (The Capital City of Warsaw). Although in the Middle ages Warsaw was a small fortified town, nowadays it is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the Europe whose value began to increase since 16th century when polish King Zygmunt III Waza moved the capital of Poland from Krakow to Warsaw. 1. Syrenka Warszawska (The Mermaid of Warsaw)

One of the most famous historical monuments located in the core of Warsaw is Syrenka Warszawska (the Mermaid of Warsaw) which is the symbol of the capital. Its sculpture depicts a girl-mermaid preparing to protect the city with a shield and a sword held in her arms.

2. Starówka (The Old Town)

One of the most worth places to visit in Warsaw is Starówka (The Old Town). It is the historical center of Warsaw which was in 1980 thanks to its picturesque appearance listed to UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. In the center of Starówka the Royal Castle (an official royal residence) is located where the numerous monuments of art are collected.

3. Nowy Świat (The New World)

If you want to see the most luxurious modern shops, cafes and restaurants you have to visit Nowy Świat (the New World) local buildings of which was built mostly in 20th century. University of Warsaw and Polish Academy of Sciences, two opera houses, theaters, museums, libraries and some monuments are located here.

4. Łazienki Królewskie (The Royal Bath Park)

One of the most visited attractions in Warsaw is the glorious Łazienki Królewskie, a royal residence. Here tourists can see a Palace on the water, summer amphitheater and many peasants walking in cozy corners. The park complex with the Palace is considered to be among the most beautiful places in Europe.
